Robert Carey

Robert Carey is the sixth chief information officer for the Department of the Navy, as well as the information management/IT workforce community manager and the critical infrastructure assurance officer. He is also an active member of the United States Navy Reserve and  currently holds the rank of commander in the Civil Engineer Corps. Carey was recalled for active duty for Operation Desert Shield/Storm and Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Carey started his federal service with the United States Army at Aberdeen Proving Ground in 1982. He began his career in the Department of the Navy in 1985 with the Naval Sea Systems Command. After that, Carey joined the Department of Navy Chief Information Officer staff in 2000 and served as the eBusiness Team Leader until 2003. During this same period, Carey also served as director of the DON Smart Card Office through 2001. In 2003, Carey entered the Senior Executive Service as the Department of Navy deputy chief information officer.

Carey is a graduate of University of South Carolina, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in engineering. He later earned a master’s degree in engineering management from The George Washington University. Carey has received numerous performance awards such as the Department of Navy  Meritorious Civilian Service Award, Superior Civilian Service Award, Distinguished Service Award. He is also a member of the Acquisition Professional Community.
