James Dickinson, chief of staff of the U.S. Strategic Command, has received Senate confirmation to serve as commanding general of the U.S. Army‘s Space and Missile Defense Command and the Army Forces Strategic Command.
The Army said Monday Dickinson will also elevate from the rank of major general to lieutenant general.
He was nominated to head SMDC/ARSTRAT in November.
Dickinson also serves as principal adviser to the Stratcom commander and deputy chief and leads operations of the command staff under his current role.
He previously worked as director for test at the Missile Defense Agency and deputy to the inspector general at the office of the Army secretary.
His 31-year military career also includes time as commanding general of the 32nd Army Air and Missile Defense Command in Texas and head of air and missile defense forces in the U.S. Pacific Command, U.S. European Command and U.S. Central Command.
