Lt. Gen. Jerry Harris: Air Force Looks to Buy Back C-5M Airlifters

1 min read

The U.S. Air Force plans to allocate funds for the reactivation of at least eight Lockheed Martin-built cargo aircraft that were placed in backup status due to the military service’s budget challenges, DoD Buzz reported Tuesday.

Lt. Gen. Jerry Harris, deputy chief of staff for strategic plans and requirements at the Air Force, told the House Armed Services Committee’s seapower and projection forces subcommittee that the service branch aims to buy two C-5M Super Galaxy planes annually in the next four years.

Gen. Carlton Everhart, head of the Air Mobility Command, said that the service branch currently has 56 of the C-5 units distributed among its active, guard and reserve components.

The Air Mobility Command aims to modernize its airlifter fleet in an effort to comply with air traffic management, communications, navigation and surveillance requirements.
