The scientists, led by NASA’s Langley Research Center in Hampton, Va., have partnered with Nanocomp Technologies to increase the production of high-strength carbon nanotube yarn as part of the Super-lightweight Aerospace Composites program, the space agency said Tuesday.
LaNetra Tate, program executive for NASA’s Game Changing Development program, said researchers are looking at leveraging ultra-lightweight materials â such as carbon nanotubes â for space technology applications since they contain mechanical properties that can be used for such endeavors.
