President Barack Obama has nominated Air Force Maj. Gen. Steven Shepro, vice director of strategic plans and policy (J-5) for the Joint Staff, as deputy chairman of NATO’s military committee.

Defense Secretary Ashton Carter announced in a notice published Friday that Shepro has also been designated for a promotion to the rank of lieutenant general.

If confirmed, he will lead the committee that provides military advice to the North Atlantic Council and the Nuclear Planning Group as well as guidance for the Allied Command Operations and Allied Command Transformation.

Shepro currently oversees the development and execution of the Defense Department‘s national military strategy.

He previously served as director of air operations and deputy chief of staff for operations, plans and requirements at the Air Force as well as held positions at the Coalition Command, Air Staff and Combatant Command.

He also commanded several military units at the operational squadron, group and wing levels and led frontline battlefield airmen during Operation Iraqi Freedom.

The 32-year Air Force veteran has completed more than 3,000 flying hours with F-16, A-10, H-1 and C-27 aircraft.
