FirstNet Discusses First Responder Broadband Network Plans With 24 States

1 min read

The First Responder Network Authority has met with 24 states to discuss plans to adopt a national broadband network for first responders, MeriTalk reported Wednesday.

Amanda Hilliard, FirstNet director of outreach, said at a committee and board meeting that the FirstNet aims to follow through on commitments to give states time to review the plans, gain feedback and engage in dialogue before they decide whether to participate or opt out of the network plan.

FirstNet and AT&T previously released individual plans for states and territories to governors via an online portal.

Brian Hobson, FirstNet state plans technical lead, said each state has given about 30 people access to the portal, which includes a commenting feature for feedback, the report stated.

FirstNet will accept input from states until August 4 then deliver official plans to governors in September.

The organization awarded AT&T a potential 25-year, $6.5 billion contract in March to help build the national public safety network, which is slated to begin core delivery in 2018.
