The Army said Sunday the lighting system uses pipes to harness natural sunlight and brighten interiors without the use of electricity or a light bulb.
The project to develop the system began in 2014 with the goal to identify an alternative source of energy that could also help preserve the environment.
Eight buildings at the Army’s Camp Carroll base have been outfitted with solar tubes to date and six more facilities are due to receive system installations, according to the service branch.
The Army expects to save as much as $80,000 a year through the project.
