President Donald Trump has announced plans to nominate William Barr, a lawyer at law firm Kirland & Ellis, to succeed Jeff Sessions as the next attorney general, Bloomberg reported Friday.
Barr would replace Matthew Whitaker, acting attorney general, once the Senate confirms him for the role.
He would oversee Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russia’s alleged involvement in the 2016 presidential election, according to the report.
Barr was attorney general during President George H.W. Bush’s administration between 1991 and 1993 and served at the CIA for four years and part of the Department of Justice’s office of legal counsel.
He is a 15-year telecommunications veteran who held leadership roles at Verizon Communications and GTE, which merged with Bell Atlantic to form Verizon.
