Barr would replace Matthew Whitaker, acting attorney general, once the Senate confirms him for the role.
He would oversee Special Counsel Robert Muellerâs investigation into Russiaâs alleged involvement in the 2016 presidential election, according to the report.
Barr was attorney general during President George H.W. Bushâs administration between 1991 and 1993 and served at the CIA for four years and part of the Department of Justiceâs office of legal counsel.
He is a 15-year telecommunications veteran who held leadership roles at Verizon Communications and GTE, which merged with Bell Atlantic to form Verizon.
